IRMA-2009 Analysis

Exam Snapshot

Number of Questions 200
Sections 4
Marking Scheme 1
Negative Marking 1/4
Number of Choices 5
Duration 120 Min

Like every year the management exam season for 2009 begins with IRMA and this was an exam that was the right primer for the upcoming IIFT and CAT exams and the remainder of the test season. IRMA 2009 was on the lines of 2008 with the exact same distribution of Qs across sections and the areas that were tested. The paper can be classified as “Easy-Moderate” in terms of the difficulty level and had no major surprises compared to that of 2008. Though students might feel happy about their performance, the point to be kept in mind is that the “Relative performance” alone matters which means that unless one gets a better score than the others, he/she will not be able to get the coveted call from IRMA. This year the score in the ‘Issues of Social Concern’ section will determine the fate of the students. However with this section being quite difficult with emphasis on trivia, the scores in this section would be quite low and those who were able to balance their performance in the other three sections would stand a good chance of securing a call. The ideal number of attempts in this paper would be around 120-130 and this coupled with an accuracy level of 80-85% should help one get a call.

English Comprehension

No. of Questions: 40

IRMA gave a slightly different English Comprehension section this year, with a lot more emphasis on Vocabulary than on Reasoning or Grammar. To begin with there was a passage on “Organic Farming and the Green revolution” which is in line with kind of passages given by IRMA in the past few years. There were 10 direct Qs from this passage and 5 Qs on Vocabulary from words highlighted in the passage. The passage was taken from an extract written by Kiran Patil titled “Organic Farming in India”. The Qs were straight forward and the choices were quite direct and this would have increased the number of attempts, accuracy and score. The Vocabulary Qs from the passage were slightly tricky and could have confused students. The 5Qs on the ‘Correct phrase to be inserted into the blank’ were all based on topics of rural development and if one read the sentence carefully there were enough clues to reveal the answer. The 5Qs on para-Jumbles were nowhere near the standard of CAT and each one of them could be answered in quick time. There was a cloze test on “Rural India” which had 10Qs. Here a score of around 7-8 was possible in about 5-6 minutes. A good time allocation for the RC would be around 12-15 min and that for Verbal would be around 15-20 mins. Overall this was a slightly easier section than the one in 2008 and the cut-offs are expected to go up from 20 marks in 2008.

The cut-off for this section is expected to be around 20-24. A score in the range of 28-30 should be considered to be very good.

Area Description Marks Difficulty level Expected Score Good Score
Verbal Ability Cloze Test 10 Easy-Moderate 4 8
Verbal Ability Fill in the Blanks (2 blanks) 5 Easy-Moderate 2 4
Verbal Ability Appropriate phrase in sentence 5 Moderate 2 3-4
Verbal Ability Para- Jumbles 5 Easy-Moderate 2 4
Reading Comprehension Passage on Organic Farming and the Green revolution 15 Moderate 5-6 9-10
Overall   40 Easy-Moderate 15-16 28-30

Quantitative Ability

No. of Questions: 50

The Quant section of IRMA includes topics from Arithmetic, Data Interpretation and Speed Math. Those with a penchant for quick calculations would have been at an advantage in this section. The questions on Arithmetic were very easy and were based on the straight forward application of formula and did not call for any reasoning to be exercised. The DI sets on ‘Villages’ and the one on ‘Children going to school’ involved fairly simple calculations and should have been attempted. The number based puzzle on ‘Men, women and children with various past-times’ ad all the data embedded and was the one to be attempted for a high score in this section. The only limiting factor in getting a huge score in this section would be time. A good time allocation for this section would be around 35 min.

The cut-off score should be around 22-26. A score in the range of 32-34 should be considered to be very good.

Area Description Marks Difficulty level Expected Score Good Score
Speed Maths Approximations 5 Easy-Moderate 3 4
Arithmetic Permutations & Combinations, ProbabilityPercentages,T&W, T&D, Numbers, PPL, SI/CI, Partnerships, Ratio Proportion, Mensuration 15 Easy-Moderate 5-6 10-11
Data Sufficiency Arithmetic based 5 Moderate 2 3
Data Interpretation Line Graph (Investments of 3 farmers) 5 Easy-Moderate 6-7 12-13
Pie Charts (Children going to school in villages) 5 Moderate
Table ( People participating in an annual fair from different villages) 5 Moderate
Table (Prices of Food grains) 5 Easy
Venn Diagram Caselet (men, women and children in a village) 5 Moderate-Difficult 2 3
Overall   50 Easy-Moderate 18-20 32-34

Analytical Reasoning

No. of Questions: 50

Those not familiar with the Critical Reasoning variety of Qs would have found this section to be on the tough side (next only to the Issues of Social Concern section). The easy Qs that would have boosted the scores of such students were the 10 Qs on Decision Making pertaining to the ’selection of a candidate’ and the logic puzzle pertaining to the seating arrangement which could have been cracked in less than 2 mins and should have been attempted. Similarly the questions on ‘Odd One Out’ were quite straight forward and involved simple logic and would have helped students attain the cut-off score. The Critical Reasoning Qs comprised of ‘Course of Action’, ‘Inferences’, ‘Cause & Effect’ and ‘Statement & Assumption’. Of these the ones on Course of action were easy and should have been attempted. A good time allocation for this section would be around 35-40 min and attempts in the range of 30-35 with an accuracy of around 80% would be considered good. Overall this was a section on par with the one in 2008 and the cut-offs are expected to be slightly higher than the 20 marks of 2008.

The cut-off score for this section should be around 20-24. A score of around 32-34 should be considered to be very good.

Area Description Marks Difficulty level Expected Score Good Score
Reasoning Miscellaneous (Odd man Out, Analogies etc.) 10 Easy 3-4 7
Critical Reasoning Courses of Action 5 Moderate 2 3-4
Critical Reasoning Cause & Effect 5 Moderate-Difficult 1 3
Critical Reasoning Statements & Assumptions 5 Moderate 2 3
Critical Reasoning Definitely True-Definitely False 5 Moderate-Difficult 1 3
Data Sufficiency Reasoning based 5 Easy 2 3
Decision Making Selection Criteria 10 Easy-Moderate 4 7-8
Analytical Reasoning Puzzle on Seating Arrangement 5 Easy 2 3
Overall   50 Moderate 17-18 32-34

Issues of Social Concern

No. of Questions: 60

This section always is the key to determining whether one gets a call from IRMA or not. This year it wasn’t any different! The Qs in this section can be described as being quite tough with a focus on ’schemes’ of the Government and trivia relating to them. This section can be classified as the toughest amongst the 4 sections of IRMA. Students would have had the feeling that even with a lot of reading this section would have been a difficult nut to crack. The questions were very descriptive and required a lot more reading than a typical General Awareness question. This was further complicated by the very tricky and difficult answer choices given. Most questions pertained to Government schemes, definitions of terms, economics, agriculture and poverty. A good time allocation for this section would be around 15 min.

The cut-off score would stay around that of last year at about 13-17. A score of around 20+ should be considered to be very good.

What NOT to do on your last day of work

So you’ve made it through the months of e-mailing your CV to friends, associates (and just about everyone else), the nerve-wracking interviews and the oh-so-important salary negotiations. You’ve put in your papers and you’ve made it through the painfully slow countdown till you bid adieu to that unpleasant boss, annoying colleague or mundane job profile. You finally made it to your last day at work – it’s exciting, it’s sad, it’s bittersweet for most. However, for some it might be just be a long overdue exit, a much-awaited relief from the stress and strain. Whatever your reason to quit, there are some basic rules of conduct for that big ‘last day’.

Here’s a list of what you should not do on your last day of work:

Rule #1: Don’t diss the boss

Sure, he probably deserves it for all the long hours, credit stealing and impossible-to-meet deadlines, but that’s still no reason to go up to him and give him a piece of your mind.

“Many people are tempted to give vent to their frustration once they know they’ll be leaving the job,” says Rajiv Kumar*, an IT professional in Mumbai [ Images ]. “But you’ll need a recommendation letter at a later date or maybe your boss knows your new one, and that will only get you into trouble. The best thing to do is have a polite farewell — a quick thank you and goodbye.”

Rule #2: Don’t delete files
You’ve worked hard on your presentations, research etc, but you worked on them for the company, using the company’s resources. Deleting them is not an option no matter how much you hate the fact that it will be used by your ex-boss/ colleague.

“Deleting files might feel good if you’ve been treated badly, but it might turn out to be illegal in certain situations or industries,” says HR professional Dheeral Mehta*.

Shwetha Singh* agrees. “I was with a internet design company for five years before I stopped working, and before I left I deleted all my designs. I got calls for months after that asking about where the designs were, why I had deleted them. It became quite a bitter experience. Since clients had seen the designs, they wanted to refer to them after I left, and the designs were company property.”

Rule #3: Don’t slack off

This applies not just to your last day but also to the days/months of your notice period. Leave behind pleasant memories. Put in that extra effort to meet deadlines, complete tasks – just because you have put in your papers doesn’t mean you have left yet. Make sure your boss and colleagues are sorry to see you go, not glad for it.

“I started working on a handover as soon as I decided to quit my job,” says software professional Hiten Mehta*. “All the projects I was working on, their status, the plans and projects in the pipeline. My company had been good to me and I didn’t want to leave them in the lurch.”

Tie up all the loose ends before you leave, so your last day can be spent saying goodbye instead of rushing around the office making sure things are in order.

Rule #4: Don’t steal office supplies

“One of my old colleagues actually made off with printer cartridges, notepads, mouse pads and even PC speakers,” says Anchal Verma, a software professional. “Taking things is definitely a no-no.”

Stealing office supplies – notepads, pens, staplers, CDs etc – is not a good idea. It will leave a bad impression on your colleagues and that’s never good.

Rule #5: Use your exit interview for good

Most large companies have exit interviews where they interview you about why you are leaving and what they might have done to convince you to stay. Again, this is not a place to rant about how unfairly you were treated and how you wish you had never joined them in the first place. That kind of thing might just come back to haunt you later in your career.

“Be polite and to-the-point,” advises Verma. “If you have had certain grouses or problems that can be addressed bring them up. But if you’re leaving because you hate your boss, chances are HR can’t do much so don’t bother bringing it up.”

Your last day should be a memorable one (for the right reasons), so bear in mind these rules before you bid farewell.

CAT 2009: Keep your strategy flexible

With less than a month to go for CAT 2009, the pressure on B-school aspirants is mounting. Strategising, mock CATs, time management — each have their own importance and value when it comes to making your CAT attempt meaningful.

With applications running into lakhs, the Common Admission Test (CAT) conducted by the Indian Institutes of Management has turned out to be one of the most competitive exams in the country.

Of the hundreds of thousands of students and professionals who apply for CAT only about 5,000 manage to secure admissions into premier B-schools in India. Preparing for such a highly competitive exam doesn’t just involve hard work but smart work and strategy.

The most important resource at your disposal is time. This is especially true for a working professional preparing for the exam. Make the best use of your weekends. We will now look at each section of CAT and their preparation methodologies.

Verbal ability
Verbal ability is the section that you have to start working on as early as possible. This is because enriching vocabulary and increasing reading comprehension is a time-consuming process and should be ideally stretched across a few months.

The ideal way to prepare would be to read the editorial page of a national daily with full comprehension. This should be done religiously no matter what the editorial is about. You might not be interested in the success of NREGA in Uttar Pradesh [ Images ], but you should still read it and understand the article completely.

If you come across an unfamiliar word underline it and continue reading. After reading the entire article find out the meaning of all the unfamiliar words and see how they are used in the article. This reading should be done with total concentration as your reading speed will improve with concentration. This exercise will improve your reading speed, vocabulary, concentration and knowledge of current affairs.

In the examination skim through the passages and decide the order in which you will attempt them depending on your comfort for the theme. Answer as many passages as possible as there are bound to be one or two easy questions in each set.

Quantitative ability
This section asks for a good understanding of the basics of mathematics. Study material from any reputed coaching institute will be a good starting point. Graduates with little or no exposure to mathematics in college should consider going through relevant topics like permutations, geometry, etc from school textbooks.

During the exam try to choose the right questions and attempt them. If you are stuck with a question for more than 1-1.5 minutes leave it, even if you are very confident you can do it. Make use of substitution of choices to solve problems wherever appropriate.

Data interpretation
This section asks for quick calculation, logical reasoning, appropriate approximations and exposure to a wide variety of problems. Speed mathematics techniques will help to a certain extent to quicken your calculations. Consider solving puzzles to improve your logical reasoning. They are interesting and help you to think out-of-the-box. Practising a wide range of problems can’t be stressed more for this section as it is the practise that gives you confidence to tackle problems.

During the exam have a look at all the sets in the section and decide on the order in which you wish to attempt them. Attempt as many as sets as possible since there is a very high chance of one-two questions being easy in each set.

Mock CATs
Inherently you might be better in one of the sections listed above. The fact that you need to do well in all the sections calls for a good understanding of your strengths and weaknesses. This can be best learnt by attending as many mock CATs as possible. After each mock CAT spend enough time solving problems that you couldn’t solve in the exam hall and cross checking with the solutions provided. See what went wrong and make sure you don’t repeat mistakes.

Compare yourself with the rest of the test takers and learn which section you have to work more on.

Also experiment with your time allocation for different sections and the order in which you attend the sections. After about 10 mock CATs you will have a good understanding of how to maximise your score by attending the sections in the optimised order with proper time allocation. In the rest of the mock CATs fine tune your strategy.

Presence of mind at the exam hall is very important. In CAT 2008 there was more weightage on the verbal ability section and still there were test takers who didn’t adapt their strategy to this twist in the paper. They spent equal time in all the sections and missed out in the verbal ability section’s cut-offs.

Good preparation, a flexible strategy and a cool head should get you very good percentiles.

After CAT
A good CAT percentile is not the end of the CAT journey. The most rewarding and satisfying part of CAT is after the calls are out. Preparing for group discussions and personal interviews will give you a lot of insight about yourself.

Coaching institutes will be after you to train you for GD/PI if you have one or more IIM calls. Take active part in these training sessions. Give your best in each of your mock GDs and mock interviews. Consider them to be your final GD and final interview. Take the feedback seriously and try to avoid repeating your mistakes.

Read newspapers regularly and have a concrete opinion on anything that is being debated in the media. Everything in your resume/interview form should be at your fingertips and you should be able to answer any question based on them. You can also expect questions from your graduation subjects and from your domain of work-experience. You should know yourself well – your strengths, weaknesses; career plans; alternative career plans; greatest achievement; proudest moment in your life etc. Introspection is your mantra as far as interviews are concerned.

Concisely put, a planned approach with enough hard-work can help you sail smoothly through CAT.

CAT: Study tips from IIM-K grad

As CAT 2009 approaches, the pressure on B-school aspirants is mounting. Strategising, mock CATs, time management — each have their own importance and value when it comes to making your CAT attempt meaningful.

To help test-takers, we asked readers who have taken the CAT to share their tips and tricks. Here, Mayank Gupta, IIM Kozhikode alumnus, shares his experiences.

Although it has been around four years since I took the CAT, the memory of the day and the months preceding it are still fresh in my mind. And the excitement about the exam has been so strong, that even after joining the IIM, I have attempted all the CAT papers as soon as they are out in the public domain.

It is approximately a time of 60 days in which you have to brace yourself for the toughest exam on the planet. But the toughness will convert to smoothness for the ones who know how to tame the CAT. Here is my advice:

Not jack, but master of all trades
Since the number of questions in the exam have now been reduced to 70-80 to be attempted in a time duration of over two hours, the tried and tested technique of ‘picking the right questions and attempting them correctly’ will not work alone. For those who are aiming for a BLACKIS (the IIMs), the key to success lies in being an expert in each and every type of question, because there will be no scope of ’skipping’ questions when the pool is so small. So, go back and understand those ignored topics of ’set theory’ or ‘boolean algebra’ which might make or break the game for you.

Practice makes a man, and woman, perfect
Remember the question that appeared in the second Mock CAT you took and got you a negative score, and left you stumped when you came to know the ’so obvious’ solution? Not really? That’s why the need for practice. Go back to the Mock papers you have attempted, have a relook at all the questions, and practice the topics which you think need more attention. Remember, you can’t afford to skip any topic as the number of questions is low.

Hope and confidence are the best tools for success
Last but not least, have confidence in yourself and keep up the hope that you will get your desired results if you provide the right kind of inputs. Stay away from people who tend to discourage you by telling their failure stories, or who disturb your study schedule by asking silly doubts. Do not get distracted by other people’s ways of approaching a problem. If you can solve a problem in a particular manner, then it is the best method for you at this point of time.

And remember, CAT is not the end of the journey. It’s just a means to get to the targets who have set for yourself. There must be alternate ways to reach those targets.

All the best!

Mayank Gupta, 99.99 percentile in Quantitative section of CAT 2005, IIM Kozhikode 2008 batch graduate, currently an entrepreneur in the education sector.

Use the mouse and crack the CAT

It’s no breaking news: this year’s CAT exam will be a computer-based one. However this has got many aspirants worried sick. What’s more, besides CAT, MAT will also provide an online option for students. The reasons for worry are more amongst those who are not acquainted with computers and the most common questions being asked are:

a. Will there be any major difference in the kind of questions that are given in the CAT?
b. How will the number of questions change ie will they be more or less?
c. Will the test become tougher or easier?

First things first: it is unlikely that the computer-based version of CAT will be drastically different from the older one in terms of the nature of question. Indeed the format will be different but the difficulty level is likely to be comparable to the older version itself.

As a matter of fact there have been strong indications that the number of questions may actually decrease! Besides, the test will certainly not be computer-adaptive (like the GMAT exam).

All you have to do is choose the questions you wish to answer, solve them and then use the mouse button or keyboard to mark your option. You will be given a rough sheet for your calculations.

How to prepare for the computer-based Quant section?

To crack the computer-based Quant section, you need to remember a few points:

1. Since the stress will be on the application of fundamentals, your knowledge of the basics is extremely crucial.

2. Figure out how you will solve a question before actually attempting it.

3. In a computer-based test, the ability to do mental calculations successfully will help you greatly. Improve on this by practicing regularly.

4. Use the answer choices for solving questions. Sometimes you will find that you can adopt a strategy of plugging in the various answer choices and checking which one works. This is particularly useful for algebra-based questions.

5. Eliminate options and narrow down your choice. Very often, after a step or two towards the solution, you will realise that some of the answer options are clearly wrong. Eliminate these and see which of the ones left works.

6. Use shortcuts but exercise caution. As far as mathematics goes, there may be just one correct answer but multiple ways of obtaining it. You can well go for the shortest way possible. In fact in a computer-based test, using short cuts may be even more useful. But it is important that you exercise caution while using shortcuts because they may not apply in all types of questions.

7. To score well in this section, regular practice is a must. Try solving a minimum of 25-30 questions on a daily basis.

8. Even in the computer-based version you must choose your questions wisely. Do not spend too much time on a particular section and neglecting the others. Remember that there are sectional cut-offs!

9. Within the Quantitative Ability section itself, there will be questions on different areas, such as geometry, probability, simple and compound interest, ratio and proportion, logarithms, permutations and combinations, arithmetic and geometric progressions etc. It is unlikely that you will be equally good in all areas. So understand which type of questions are your strengths and attempt them accordingly. Remember that in the computer-based version of CAT, you are allowed to mark certain questions and return to them later. You could do this for questions belonging to a topic that you are comfortable with, even if you are not able to immediately solve the question.

10. It is important to maintain relatively high accuracy levels in this section, as the ambiguity is much less than for a section such as Reading Comprehension. Avoid guesswork and do not attempt questions blindly. Mark the questions that you wish to return to later. Make educated guesses only after trying to eliminate options that seem clearly wrong.

Types of multiple choice questions

Multiple choice questions in all papers and sections will contain four answers, of which only one is correct. The types of questions in a paper may be based on following logic:

(i) Recall:
These are based on facts, principles, formulae or laws of the discipline. The candidate is expected to be able to obtain the answer either from his/her memory of the subject or at most from a one-line computation.

Example
Q. During machining maximum heat is produced
(A) in flank face (B) in rake face
(C) in shear zone (D) due to friction between chip and tool.

(ii) Comprehension:
These questions will test the candidate?s understanding of the basics of his/her field, by requiring him/her to draw simple conclusions from fundamental ideas.

Example
Q. A DC motor requires a starter in order
(A) to develop a starting torque
(B) to compensate for auxiliary field ampere turns
(C) to limit armature current at starting
(D) to provide regenerative braking

(iii) Application: In these questions, the candidate is expected to apply his/her knowledge either through computation or by logical reasoning.

Example
Q. The sequent depth ratio of a hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel is 16.48. The Froude number at the beginning of the jump is:
(A) 10.0         (B) 5.0
(C) 12.0         (D) 8.0

(iv) Analysis and Synthesis:
These can be linked questions, where the answer to the first question of the pair is required in order to answer its successor. Or these can be common data questions, in which two questions share the same data but can be solved independently of one another.

Common data questions:
Multiple questions may be linked to a common data problem, passage and the like. Two or three questions can be formed from the given common data problem. Each question is independent and its solution obtainable from the above problem data/passage directly. (Answer of the previous question is not required to solve the next question). Each question under this group will carry two marks.

Example
Common Data, for instance, Questions 55 and 56 in main paper:
Let X and Y be jointly distributed random variables such that the conditional distribution of Y, given X=x, is uniform on the interval (x-1,x+1). Suppose E(X)=1 and Var(X)=5/3.

First question using common data:
Q.55 The mean of the random variable Y is
(A) 1/2     (B) 1     (C) 3/2     (D) 2

Second question using common data:
Q.56 The variance of the random variable Y is
(A) 1/2     (B) 2/3     (C) 1     (D) 2

Linked answer questions:
These questions are of problem solving type. A problem statement is followed by two questions based on the problem statement. The two questions are designed such that the solution to the second question depends upon the answer to the first one. In other words, the first answer is an intermediate step in working out the second answer. Each question in such ?linked answer questions? will carry two marks.

Example
